Becoming a Member of Capitaland Chorus and Sweet Adelines International
The Audition
Barbershop harmony consists of four voice parts; Lead, Baritone, Tenor and Bass. A prospective member is “voice-placed” after her first visit to determine which part she is most suited to sing. She will then be given a CD and sheet music with a current song from our repertoire to learn. In Sweet Adelines we don’t hold our music when we perform. A prospective member memorizes all the notes and words of one song for her audition.
During the next few weeks, during rehearsal, she is given practice time with our musical leaders. When she is ready to sing her song with complete note and word accuracy and has visited the chorus at least 3 times she will audition by singing her part in a quartet. After passing the audition, she is eligible to be voted into membership in the chorus.
The process of auditioning is challenging and very rewarding! If you’ve never auditioned before, there is no reason to be concerned. All members of the chorus warmly encourage prospective members, as we've all had to go through the same process.
